TOTAL WELLNESS MAGAZINE

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF (2017–2020); STAFF WRITER (2016–2018)

digital & print publishing

As the Editor-in-Chief of UCLA’s student-run health and wellness publication, my proudest achievement was spearheading our transition from a traditional print magazine to an online platform, which grew to attract more than 10,000 unique visitors per month. Overseeing all content creation, I led a team of 50 editorial staff, helping student writers, designers, photographers, and videographers develop ideas, cultivate sources, and produce engaging health content that also maintains scientific integrity.

    • Oversaw all written and visual contents for the digital and print production of Total Wellness, including an annual campus-wide distribution of 5,000 magazines around UCLA.

    • Founded the Digital team, comprising photographers, videographers, web designers, and social media managers to successfully relaunch Total Wellness as an online platform for college students to seek information about health and wellness.

    • Introduced quarterly zines to Total Wellness’ portfolio to engage audiences on issues of health and wellness through art, illustration, and photography; zine publications include Move Well (Winter 2020), From Within (Fall 2019), and A Sweet Cuizine (Spring 2019).

    • Began the practice of sharing analytics reports internally to give staff members insight into best-performing content, and to provide a quantitative measure of performance to inform future publications.

After a rewarding internship with Green Queen (Asia’s eco-wellness media platform), I was inspired to bring Total Wellness into the digital space. At the time, we were producing only print issues. While many of us, including myself, enjoyed seeing the tangible results of our hard work in the form of a physical magazine, I saw more potential for growth in Total Wellness as an online media platform. Specifically, I recognized that in today’s increasingly digital world, perhaps one of the most impactful ways to achieve our organization’s goal–to promote health and wellness among college students at UCLA–is through digital, social content. Hence, after being appointed Editor-in-Chief, I began to train our student writers to optimize web content for SEO, all while continuing to write for the Magazine myself. Our first web article, “Midnight Sweet-Tooth?”, which I wrote and co-designed with our then-Art Director, was published online in October 2018. This article remains one of Total Wellness’s most popular content, having reached more than 3,600 unique readers.
